Saving PowerPoint Presentation to MP4 File

Why turn your PowerPoint Presentation into mp4 video?

When you want to give a high-fidelity version of your presentation to colleagues or customers (either as an e-mail attachment, published to the web, on a CD or DVD), save it and let it play as a video.

You can save your presentation as either an MPEG-4 video file (.mp4) or a .wmv file. Both formats are widely supported and can be streamed over the internet.

Some tips to remember when recording your presentation as a video:

  • You can record and time voice narration and laser pointer movements in your video.

  • You can control the size of the multimedia file and the quality of your video.

  • You can include animations and transitions in your movie.

  • Viewers do not need to have PowerPoint installed on their computers to watch it.

  • If your presentation contains an embedded video, the video will play correctly without your needing to control it.

  • Depending on the content of your presentation, creating a video may take some time. Lengthy presentations and presentations with animations, transitions, and media content will likely take longer to create.

Elements that are not included in a video that you create using PowerPoint:

  • Media inserted in previous versions of PowerPoint. To include these, you can convert or upgrade the media object.

  • For example, if you inserted the media using PowerPoint 2007, it will be linked and it will play in the presentation. However, when you export the file as a video, the linked media will be dropped. You can convert the file to the new file format (click the File tab, and under Info, click Convert), or you can right-click the media object and then click to upgrade; it will embed the file and export it correctly.

  • QuickTime media (unless you have a third-party QuickTime codec named ffdShow installed and you have optimized for compatibility)

  • Macros

  • OLE/ActiveX controls

Saving PP to MP4 video:

The fact is that there are many versions of PowerPoint out there from Microsoft. Each handles video file saving a little differently. In all cases be sure to check your HELP menu for how your particular version works.

Be sure to save your PowerPoint presentation as a native (PPT,PPTX,PPTS,etc) project file before you start testing which functions work on your version and risk losing all your hard work.

With some versions, the fastest way to convert your PowerPoint presentations into a video format, is to use the Save As dialog box. This works best when you have narrated your PowerPoint presentation using the Record Slide Show dialog box, and just want the Full HD (1080p) quality for your video.

Alternatively, some versions allow:

  • With PowerPoint opened with your Speakers Bureau 30-Minute Presentation

  • From the MAIN MENU, select the FILE button

  • Click on SAVE & SEND.

  • Select Create a Video.

  • Select Computer & HD Display to make changes to quality and size .

  • Click on Create Video and save it on the name of your choice.

Alternatively, other versions allow:

  • Move mouse to the “File” menu option on the top-left corner and then click it.

  • Select the “Export” option on the drop-down menu.

  • Click the “Create a Video” option. Then 2 drop-down options appear.

  • In the first drop-down box, select output video quality: Computer & HD Displays, Internet & DVD, and Portable Devices.

  • In the 2nd pane, set Recorded Timings and Narrations if you need (optional).

  • In “Seconds to spend on each slide” box, set the time duration.

  • Click the “Create Video” button.

  • In the “Save As” pop-up menu, set output Directory and File Name,

  • in the “Save as Type” box, choose MP4

  • Click the “Save” button to start to convert PowerPoint into video format.

MP4 is a standard video format, and almost all devices support this format. It will take a few moments depending on the presentation size. If you have two simple slides, it will take around 15 seconds to complete the conversion. However, long presentations, with multiple slides and embedded video narration, may take a very long time to compile and save.
