Distractions in Your Video

Here are some things that have happened to me over the years, try to avoid them if you can:

Plant growing out of your head, corner of the wall growing out of your head

Recording equipment reflected into lens by a mirror or shiny surface

Background is just too busy

Traffic walking can be seen through a nearby window

Something in motion in your foreground/background

Cuckoo Clock starts to chime the hour

Your cell phone (or the house phone) rings, incessantly

The cat walks across your desk in front of the lens

A wind blows your script onto the floor

You can see the text that you are reading, reflecting off your glasses

Your chair creaks

Your wristwatch keeps hitting the table

Learn to say nothing when your mouth is trying to catch up to your brain

The whole segment is recorded without your head being in the shot

No one wants to see your floor or your ceiling

Don't wear earbuds while recording

Your microphone has become unclipped and is sitting on the floor

You are chewing gum

Your upper plate comes loose

Your hearing aid starts to beep from low battery

Your cleaning lady is singing and flushing during recording

The garbage disposal is turned on during recording

Airplane flies over your studio during recording

Neighbor rings your doorbell to borrow a cup of sugar

Leave green screening to the professionals

Your laptop camera tilted too far back making your breasts look larger

Your laptop camera tilted too far forward making your head look larger

Use a pillow to keep your body parallel with the laptop screen

You forgot to brush/comb your hair, or shave this morning

Your tie doesn't match your shirt, which doesn't match your coat, which doesn't match your background color

You have some spinach caught in your teeth

You are wearing Checks or Herringbone fabric which looks like the pattern is moving in the recording

You are using your eyebrows for inflection, instead of your voice

You can't stay centered in the frame

You ate a large meal just before recording

There's no way to hide a fart during recording

Don't step into a Head & Shoulders shot

A 'Wardrobe Malfunction' must cause a re-shoot

Squeaky shoes will squeak

Too close to the camera lens invades viewer's personal space

Too far away from the camera lens gets you lost in your background

Each time you stop because of an error doubles the chances of more errors in the re-shoot

Too Looong segments are boring

Too short segments are annoying

You have Butt Squeeze syndrome - This may take a little explaining.

When we first moved into the area 30 years ago, the cable company was carrying the evening news broadcast from Flagstaff. It was so homespun that it hurt (I moved to Prescott from a LARGE market).

One particular news anchor, would get so into reading her lines off of the teleprompter to the point that she would squeeze her butt cheeks together, which lifted her entire body in her chair while she emphasized her point. I'm guessing that she didn't realize she was doing it (who knows), but it added just that little bit more of homespun to the broadcast, and a smile to my evening.

If you find that you have Butt Squeeze syndrome, either pick a chair with shorter legs, or stand during recording.
